BUSANZA, DRC (July 11, 2013) Early this morning, a FARDC-FDLR-Mayi-Mayi coalition launched an attack on the village of Busanza in Rutshuru territory in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Shepherds reported to Virunga News that the assailants stole one hundred cows.  The M23 military (ARC) repelled the attack and inflicted heavy losses in the ranks of the FDLR. FDLR Commander Sangano Musohoke “Soki” (visible in the photo wearing a Congolese army uniform) and seven of his soldiers were killed during the fighting. At Kanyarucinya in Nyiragongo territory, the United Nations peacekeeping mission (MONUSCO) thwarted another attack from the same coalition.  According to a mother of three displaced by the battle, this move constituted a first in the history of United Nations peacekeepers, who have functioned only as observers. Two other unidentified bodies were seen near the observatory post of the UN Mission. The government of Congo in Kinshasa denies any responsibility for the attack on the M23. Meanwhile, peace talks continue in Kampala, Uganda under the facilitation of the ICGLR.
